George Berry, LLB, MNZM | Partner

George is the senior partner in Berry & Co, based in the firm's Oamaru office.

With a life-long involvement in law, George has a depth of legal experience with particular emphasis in property, business and company law, planning and litigation management, and family succession. He has also served as a director and chairman of a number of major companies in the property, airline, ports and health sectors. He currently advises electricity line companies, irrigation, contracting and road transport companies. He also has a lifetime of experience of acting for, and advising, agribusiness clients.

George's legal work has included advisory and transactional work for;
• Large land and resort development projects, including Millbrook Resort and other tourism projects, Peninsula Bay, Pegasus Town and other major Southern Lakes District developments
• Hillend Station Farm Park Development - described as a model for future developments combining rural residential living with farm development and ecological restoration
• Airport planning (Queenstown, Nelson, Invercargill and the Omarama airports)
• Port planning and noise management issues
• Electricity line company and electricity generating requirements
• Establishment of irrigation companies, and obtaining associated water and land use (urban and rural) consents
• Department of Conservation concessions
• Crown Pastoral Land Act and Tenure Review negotiations (including valuation issues)
• Land compensation claims under the Public Works Act
• Designations for public utilities
• Property purchase and sale negotiations arrangements and related financing
• Family succession

George is also a director and consultant to North South Environmental Law, a specialist environmental law practice with offices in Auckland and Queenstown.

George is currently chairman of the Waitaki District Health Services company which operates Oamaru Hospital. He is a former director of the National Airways Corporation, Port Otago Limited and Chalmers Properties Ltd, and is a former chairman of the North Otago Regional Committee of the NZ Historic Places Trust and the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust. In 2002 George was awarded the MNZM for community service, particularly to education.

A keen outdoors man, George has spent much recreational time in the hills and mountains and on the water, and continues to do so when work commitments permit.
